Overview
Capital Sports Construction, Inc. partnered with the City of Colorado Springs to deliver a multi-field turf conversion at Cottonwood Creek Park, located at 7040 Rangewood Dr. The project transformed three existing baseball/softball grass diamonds into modern synthetic turf fields, integrating them into the park’s broader recreation complex — which includes soccer fields, courts, playgrounds, walking paths, and a community recreation center.
The upgrades create durable, weather-resilient surfaces that support heavy use by youth leagues, adult teams, and community events while reducing water usage and maintenance needs.
Project Goals
- Replace natural grass diamonds with long-lasting synthetic turf fields
- Improve drainage, field consistency, and all-weather playability
- Reduce water consumption and ongoing maintenance costs
- Support multiple sports and recreational uses within the same park complex
- Increase the capacity of the park to host tournaments, leagues, and community events
Our Scope of Work
Site Design & Engineering
Our work began with a comprehensive evaluation of the existing fields, soil conditions, and park-wide grading. We designed a drainage and base-layer plan to ensure proper stormwater management and foundation stability to support multiple synthetic fields used in heavy rotation.
Site Construction
The construction phase involved removing existing natural grass surfaces, regrading playing surfaces to specified tolerances, installing engineered aggregate bases, and constructing drainage systems designed to handle Colorado Springs weather patterns. Sub-base preparation ensured all fields met structural requirements for synthetic turf installation and long-term durability.
Synthetic Turf Installation
We installed high-performance synthetic turf across all three converted fields, including:
- Monofilament turf layers engineered for baseball/softball use and heavy wear
- Performance infill optimized for traction, ball response, and shock absorption
- Durable seam and edge systems to sustain frequent use and minimize maintenance
- Field striping and configurations suitable for baseball, softball, and auxiliary sports use
The result is a set of all-weather, multipurpose fields integrated into a larger public recreation campus.
Project Highlights
- Completed a multi-field turf conversion at a large community park
- Significantly reduced water usage and maintenance compared to natural grass
- Enhanced drainage and weather resilience for consistent playability
- Increased flexibility for hosting youth leagues, adult sports, and tournaments
- Enabled year-round recreation and maximized park utilization
- Contributed to the long-term sustainability of the park’s athletic infrastructure
Results
Following the installation, Cottonwood Creek Park now offers resilient, high-quality synthetic fields that support frequent, heavy use for baseball, softball, and other recreational activities. The upgraded surfaces provide consistent footing and performance, even following adverse weather, and require minimal maintenance compared to traditional grass fields.
The project supports the park’s broader mission of delivering accessible, community-oriented recreation year-round, enhancing opportunities for youth sports, adult leagues, and family activities. Reduced water use and maintenance costs deliver long-term value to the city and residents alike.
