Overview
Capital Sports Construction, Inc. partnered with Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL to install a dedicated synthetic turf practice field for the university’s renowned marching band, the Marching 100. The new facility grants the band a reliable, purpose-built surface for rehearsals, drills, and marching formations — regardless of weather or season.
Through meticulous site engineering and turf installation, the project upgrades the band’s rehearsal infrastructure to a standard befitting a top-tier collegiate music organization.
Project Goals
- Provide the Marching 100 with a stand-alone, all-weather practice field
- Ensure consistent, safe footing for drill rehearsals and formations
- Enhance durability and reduce maintenance compared to traditional grass or shared fields
- Improve drainage and field performance in all weather conditions
- Deliver a versatile turf surface suitable for marching band and auxiliary rehearsals
Our Scope of Work
Site Design & Engineering
We evaluated existing site conditions, soil and drainage behavior, and rehearsal traffic patterns. Design planning focused on a flat, well-drained field layout capable of supporting frequent band use. The base design included engineered grading, drainage pathways, and a foundation robust enough for repetitive foot traffic and equipment loads.
Site Construction
Construction included full removal of any prior turf or natural surface, precise grading to ensure levelness and water runoff control, and installation of a compacted aggregate base designed for optimal drainage and stability. Sub-base preparation followed specifications required for heavy-duty synthetic turf systems.
Synthetic Turf Installation
A high-performance synthetic turf system was installed to accommodate marching band rehearsals. Work included:
- Laying a monofilament turf surface designed for durability and consistent footing
- Installing performance infill to balance shock absorption and stability
- Securing seams and edges to handle frequent foot traffic and instrument transport
- Providing a clean, level surface optimized for formations, drills, and marching practice
